HYPE VIDEOScriptThe ask: collaborate with Belle Epoch to create a 45-second hype video that generates excitement around this company’s de-extinction and conservation efforts.
The task: write the script for its on-screen text.
Right away, it was obvious that the key components of this script had already been said aloud by the impassioned people who work at Colossal. Years of writing for this client meant exposition to countless TedTalks and interviews full of sound bites that, if arranged correctly, could be far more impactful than on-screen text alone.
After culling and compiling hundreds of sound bites into a 26-clip voiceover track, the first pass was mapped out on a document (shown). But, upon receiving the video’s fast-paced soundtrack, the clips’ inconsistent speed and sound quality made it apparent that the spoken word would need to be limited to a select few sound bites.
Three fragments were selected for use, each derived from a profound sentiment by Colossal’s most-outspoken leaders—Beth Shapiro, Chief Science Officer; Alta Charo, Head of Bioethics; and George Church, co-founder. Here’s what that looked like:
The pivot required the sort of self-compromise every writer dreads—a handshake between idealism and pragmatism. But in this industry, it pays to be a plastic collaborator.
The result is an energetic, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it hype video that infuses the gravity, urgency and chaos of our planet’s lost biodiversity with altruism, innovation and hope for a better tomorrow. Check it out below:
